Blog Feeds

Ralph, this is what your feed url and content looks like.  But when converted the following and many variations of the widget are possible in terms of size, color photo, additional over type link notifications etc.

There many usable feeds, rss, atom, feed burner etc. and some of them are automatic with some blog platforms.  In all cases the feed is registered for those interested in the tag content and that is why in some cases you will see literally a collection of feed icons at the bottom of some sites.  Anyway just so you can see for yourself.

Kinship with the Wolf

The Amazing Story of the Woman Who Lives with Wolves.

A lavishly illustrated, heartfelt examination of the wolf as a spiritual and ecological role model

• Dispels the myths of the wolf as a “blood-thirsty predator”

• Shows the spiritual importance of connecting to the creatures of the natural world

• Tells the story of the author’s 8 years of living with wolves at the Lüneburger Heide Wildlife Preserve in Germany

In the past, animals had worth to people only if they were edible, could carry heavy loads obediently, or had some other practical use. Recently, however, we have started to realize what we have lost through the extinction of so many wild creatures. Every step we take away from nature we pay for with a loss of understanding and wisdom. What we persecute and exterminate in the outer world we also eradicate in our souls. The highly stigmatized wolf, brought nearly to extinction by humans, is one part of our natural world whose value and wisdom we are just beginning to understand.

In Kinship with the Wolf, Tanja Askani reveals a new facet of relating to wolves and to the world as a whole. Unlike other wolf researchers who strive to dominate these “vicious predators” and who measure their success by how much the wolf pack obeys them, Askani bases her wolf relationships on broad respect and knowledge as well as extraordinary empathy and love. She reveals a new picture of the wolf as a highly intelligent, social, sensitive creature that brings inestimable value to healthy natural systems. Her respect for the pack’s autonomous rules and her sensitivity to the wolves’ changing feelings and moods clearly distinguishes her from others who work with wolves. Her ability to communicate with and relate to wolves is a model of how we can respond to the intelligent complexity of life with care, respect, and wisdom and how we can maintain an intensive connection to the natural world without exercising human dominance.

Unique Champion for Cats
Founder of King Street Cats and Unique shop dies of pancreatic cancer.

By Michael Lee Pope
Thursday, December 04, 2008

For almost four decades, Ethel Beun was a fixture on King Street. Her shop, known simply as "Unique," has been in operation since 1969, and she helped found an animal-rescue organization known as King Street Cats in 2003. After a two-year struggle with pancreatic cancer, Beun died Monday, Dec. 1. She was 72.

"She was quiet in her way of giving," said daughter Jennifer Rohrbach, adding that she helped homeless people as well as homeless animals. "There were things that she did that we wouldn’t even find out about until long afterward."

A native of Singac, N.J., Beun studied elementary education at the University of Arizona before marrying a Foreign Service officer in the State Department and moving to Peru. While in the South American country, she founded a school known as "Ethel’s Day Nursery," which offered lessons on reading and writing as well as three meals a day.

"She saw the poverty there, and her background was in education so she knew she could do something about it," said Rohrbach. "These kids had parents who worked on fields or in the chicken farms, and the school was a need that my mother knew she could fill."

In the early 1960s, she moved to Alexandria and taught elementary schools for a few years in the District of Columbia before opening Unique in 1969. Originally located at 211 King, the store eventually moved into rented space at 213 King — a building she purchased for $140,000 in 1976, according to city land records. Although the store initially specialized in imported items from Mexico and Peru, it has evolved into a quirky gift shop that sells everything from candles to greeting cards. Next month, the store will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

"Ethel not only rescued animals, she rescued people," said Cindy Collegeman, a Unique employee and a longtime friend of Beun. "When people walked through the door here, this was a place of healing. I’ve always thought of it as kind of like ‘Cheers,’ a place where people felt welcomed."

In 2003, Beun founded a cat rescue known as "King Street Cats" and donated space on the second floor of the building. The nonprofit agency rescues about 250 cats a year, with more than 85 percent of contributions to the nonprofit organization go directly to the care, feeding and sheltering of homeless cats.

"She had space in her building and space in her heart for the mission of this organization," said Allie Phillips, president of King Street Cats. "Ethel was the kind of person who loved animals, especially cats who were homeless, abused or neglected."

She is survived by her husband, Jim Logan; a daughter, Jennifer Rohrbach; a son, Brian Beun; a sister, Sonya Hauser; and four grandchildren.

Chester's story and picture were sent in by Jim Logan, husband of the owner Ethel Beun. Here's what Jim has to say about Chester: "Chester is the the guiding light at The Unique Shop in Alexandria VA. He's a rescue cat that came to the store from the Albert Foundation in 1992 when he was about 1 year old. Chester's workday starts early when the morning walkers in the Old Town historic district tap on the window and feed him through the mail slot. His store is in a restaurant district, so he works late into the night. During the night shift, he's been known to initiate first-time visitors by reaching outside the mail slot to attract attention. He has his own clientele who come into the store just to visit him, and he's exchanged photographs with the cats of visitors from as far away as Japan. Chester loves canine visitors--probably because he knows that's the way to win the hearts of those on the other end of the leash who sometimes have treats in their pockets."
